On this episode of The REAL Podcast, we sit down with Carlsbad real estate broker, Megan Schenck to talk about her success and how she used a hyperlocal approach to create a meaningful business.
Our partnership with Megan is unique. What started just a few years ago with a cup of coffee at our local coffee shop, has now blossomed into something really special. During our first meeting, we sat and strategize all of Megan’s video goals for the year and how we could help her take “Three Lagoons Realty” to the next level with video marketing.
When speaking with Megan, we asked her how she came up with the name of her brokerage firm. The name “Three Lagoons Realty” comes from a collaborative effort made from both Megan and her husband Andrew. When they were brainstorming names, the common themes that kept coming up were the family’s love for being outdoors, hiking, the coastal lifestyle, and embracing Carlsbad nature. Megan knew she wanted the name of her brokerage to be meaningful and hyperlocal to community of Carlsbad. Drew suggested “Three Lagoons” referring to the local lagoons of North San Diego County; Batiquitos, Buena Vista and Agua Hedionda Lagoons.
Not only have we been able to work with Megan, we’ve also gotten the opportunity to work with her husband, Andrew. After seeing the videos we created with Megan, Andrew was impressed and suggested to his employer that they hire us for their company bio video along with 12 other videos communicating the company’s brand, culture and success. Shortly thereafter, we spent an entire weekend following company leadership for The Turner Group highlighting conferences, events, discussions, relationship building in order to piece together an phenomenal story. It’s not every day you get to work with both the real estate agent and his/her spouse. We feel truly honored.
Megan’s career started in insurance, an industry she knew was not a life-long goal. A real estate friend of hers had encouraged her to get her real estate license. In 2006, Megan did just that and shortly-after was hired at KB homes as a Broker Relations Manager. In this position Megan played many roles from inside sales to broker liaison. For six years she soaked in every aspect of this industry, from new home construction, working with buyers, financing and the importance of working with real estate agents. It was during this time that she knew she wanted to own and run her own real estate brokerage firm. In 2012, Megan received her California Real Estate Broker License and in 2013 a new chapter was born, “Three Lagoons Realty.”
“I’m proud of my community, I love it. I feel it’s so important to get involved. We have one life to live on this planet, make the most of it. It (Carlsbad) has been so good to me, the least I can do is give back and get involved. I enjoy it!”
Being heavily involved in the community is important to Megan and it is for this reason she chose to create her business in Carlsbad, CA. To be in a city with top rated schools, gorgeous beaches, scenic hiking trails and friendly parks, etc., really enhances the quality of life for its residents; hence why Megan decided to make Carlsbad a permanent home for her and her family. What better way to know an area than to live in it? Her kids go to school in Carlsbad, they are involved in afterschool programs, are active in community sports, volunteer in local organizations and enjoying hiking the trials. Megan and her family live, work, and play in Carlsbad and she firmly believes in it.
Building deep roots in Carlsbad, CA and incorporating a hyperlocal approach is what she attributes a lot of her success to. She speaks firsthand to this belief and has numerous amounts of clients to prove it. One example of her hyperlocal marketing is Megan’s use of a unique hashtag specific to Carlsbad in all her social media accounts. With this simple, yet effective approach, Megan has successfully build relationships with clients she had never even met. In fact, she even help find a home for a family from across the pond; England. This client is now a friend even until this day. This example, plus many of stories like this one is what keeps Megan passionate about what she does.
Megan attributes her overall success to her hustle, hard work, being persistent, being ok with working odd hours and a “keep moving forward” mentality. She is a true believer of, “You are the creator of your own destiny, get the right mindset. You have one life, make the best of it. Work your butt off to make it happen! ”
Megan and her family (husband Andrew, sons Reid & Wesley & Boston Terrier puppy Sydney) reside in Carlsbad, CA. When Megan is not working you will find her with her family hiking the local trails, kayaking at the beach & lagoons, or enjoying the shops and restaurants in Carlsbad Village or along the coast.
