Carlsbad Lagoon is one of San Diego’s most popular places to visit. It’s seven miles of surf and sand, make it an ideal spot for a wide range of outdoor activities including; swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing, kayaking or just soaking up the California sunshine.

Also known as Agua Hedionda Lagoon, is a saltwater wetland and watershed. The lagoon is made up of three sections:  a 66-acre outer lagoon, a 27-acre middle lagoon, and a 293-acre inner lagoon. Mud flats, salt, and freshwater marsh, and deep water can all be found throughout Agua Hedionda. The lagoon is also a stopover for migratory waterfowl, and it is a favorite among bird watchers.

 

In addition to being popular with locals and tourists alike, Carlsbad Lagoon hosts numerous scientific research programs by organizations such as Scripps Institution of Oceanography and San Diego State University. There are also several restaurants nearby if you get hungry while staying at the lagoon.
